Frequently Asked Questions
Everything indie authors, readers, and publicists need to know about City Book Review.
Does City Book Review accept self-published and indie books?
Yes. City Book Review was founded specifically to serve indie and self-published authors. Unlike many traditional review outlets that focus exclusively on books from major publishers, City Book Review’s entire mission is to give independent authors a credible, professional platform for discovery and validation.
How do I submit my book to City Book Review?
Authors can submit through the submission form on citybookreview.com. You will be asked to provide your book’s title, genre, a brief synopsis, and either a physical or digital copy depending on the review package selected. Publicists can also submit on behalf of their clients through the same process.
What is the difference between a sponsored and free book review?
City Book Review offers two paths for authors. A sponsored review guarantees your book will be reviewed by a professional reviewer within 4–6 weeks, with the review published across our network of review sites. A free general submission adds your book to our Available Books list sent to reviewers every two weeks, but a review is not guaranteed—we receive over 1,500 submissions monthly and review approximately 300 through the free program.
How do I submit my book for a free review at City Book Review?
To submit your book for a free general review at City Book Review, your book must be within 60 days of its publication date. Visit our General Submission page and complete the submission form with your book’s details. Your title will be added to the Available Books list that we send to our reviewers every two weeks. While a review is not guaranteed through the free program, many books are selected. For a guaranteed review, consider our Sponsored Review option.
: Can I submit an eBook for review, or does it need to be a printed book?
City Book Review accepts printed book formats for General Submission and eBooks for Sponsored reviews. Our reviewer pool includes readers who prefer digital formats and others who prefer physical copies. Some of our reviewers are based outside the United States and can only review eBooks. You can submit whichever format you prefer, or send both to give your book the best chance of being matched with an available reviewer quickly.
What genres does City Book Review cover?
City Book Review accepts books across a wide range of genres, including literary fiction, mystery, thriller, romance, science fiction, fantasy, memoir, biography, history, self-help, business, health, religion, poetry, and more. We also review children’s books and young adult titles through our dedicated Kids’ BookBuzz program. Both traditionally published and self-published titles in any genre are welcome for sponsored or free general submissions.
How long does it take to get a book reviewed by City Book Review?
City Book Review typically completes sponsored book reviews within 4–6 weeks from the date of submission. The process includes matching your book with an appropriate reviewer from our pool of over 120 professional adult reviewers (or 80+ children’s reviewers for Kids’ BookBuzz), followed by a thorough reading and a written review with a 1–5 star rating. Free general submissions may take longer depending on reviewer availability.
Can I use my City Book Review in my book marketing?
Yes. Authors are permitted and encouraged to quote their City Book Review in marketing materials including book covers, back matter, press releases, social media, author websites, and Amazon listings. A credible third-party review is one of the most effective marketing assets an indie author can have.
What if I disagree with my review or receive a low rating?
City Book Review stands behind the integrity of every review. If you receive a sponsored review with a rating of 1 or 2 stars, you have the option to request that the review not be published. However, we do not revise reviews to change the reviewer’s opinion or inflate star ratings—our credibility depends on honest assessments. If you believe there is a factual error in your review, contact us and our editorial team will investigate and correct any verified mistakes.
Can I update my book’s information after a review is published?
If you need to change your book’s details—such as format, price, or page count—before the review is published on City Book Review, simply contact us and we will update it at no charge. If you need changes made after the review has already been uploaded and published on our site, a $25 administrative fee applies. This covers the editorial and technical work required to modify a live review listing.
What is the difference between City Book Review and Kirkus or Publishers Weekly?
Kirkus and Publishers Weekly were historically gatekeepers primarily serving the traditional publishing industry. City Book Review was purpose-built for indie and self-published authors, offering accessible submission options, comparable editorial standards, and a growing digital presence optimized for modern book discovery — including search engines and AI platforms. Many indie authors submit to City Book Review alongside or instead of traditional outlets.
Can self-published authors submit books for review?
Absolutely. City Book Review welcomes self-published authors and is one of the most trusted review services for the indie publishing community. Whether you published through Amazon KDP, IngramSpark, Barnes & Noble Press, or any other platform, you can submit your book for a sponsored or free general review. Our reviewer pool has extensive experience with self-published titles across all genres. Many of our most popular reviews come from independent and self-published authors.
